Stock options

The Magpul backpacker stock for the Ruger PC9 showed up today.

I compared it side by side with the backpacker stock for the 10/22 and its is almost exactly the same size.

The stock is pretty much exactly the same as the Backpacker 10/22 stock, but the compartment in the stock that would normally hold a handful of 10/22 mags is now designed to fit one Magpul 21-rd 9mm magazine. Handy. Interestingly, ulike the 10/22 version, it came with a second cover for the stock compartment. This other cover acts like a riser to, presumably, give you a higher cheek weld for use with optics. Other than that..same stock, basically.

Like the 10/22 version, there’s no provision for a sling unless you order up some Magpul QD sockets. Annoying, but I suppose I can see why they went that way.

And, since TPIWWP:

Before….

…and after.

Buttstock offers a compartment with enough room to store a Magpul 21-rd Glock mag.

G17 for size comparison. This is almost the exact same size as the 10/22 version of the Backpacker stock.

The stock was about $150 from Brownells, but it’s a much better choice, IMHO, than that original Ruger stock. The QD swivel points are useful, the onboard mag storage is a major plus, the color is practical, and the way the barrel assembly locks to the stock to keep everything together in one unit is a really nice feature.

So, worth the money? In my opinion yes. I’ll take it out this weekend and do some shooting with it, but I expect it to perform just fine. Magpul has a pretty good reputation for doing stuff right.

  1. I have been waiting for a magpul review for the Ruger PC9. I purchased the Ruger about two years ago and I have pondered the Magpul stock as well.
    Thanks for the imput.

  2. That appears to be a practical upgrade for a concealable compact BOB – truck – boat rifle. Glad they left off the bayonet lug :^)

  3. Does the PC stand for Politically Correct after all even with this stock it’s CA/NJ Legal. OK it has a threaded muzzle so give them time.
Now all Ruger needs to do is make a Mini 14 with a removable barrel.

  4. Nice upgrade. Would certainly need sling mounts and a good sling of choice, as for any long gun, to add utility and free up your hands for other things. Is the spare magazine storage snug, or will there be rattle clatter with movement? Another inquiry would be a suitable sized padded case for opsec transport, deployment or storage protection. Ruger had them before for 10/22 takedown or charger models but unsure if still offering such or a dimensionally suitable alternative. Happy plinking.

  5. How does the weight with the magpul stock compare to the original configuration? Is there a significant difference?

    • On the Ruger site, they list the Takedown model as 6.8 lb. [I’m thinking that’s with no mag] with a Length of Pull of 12.62″ – 14.12″.
The Backpacker model is 6.2 lb. with a Length of Pull of 13.75″.

  6. Would the Glock factory Gen 5 [it fits all Glock 9mm] 24 round magazine fit in the compartment?

  7. I’ve just noticed in that last picture there is room under the barrel for a light even when stored.
