Estate sale

Minding my own business…not hurting anyone…just trying to go about my life without interference and pain. And I get a text message:

“Estate sale near your place with lots of gun stuff…” and an address.

Okay, maybe it’s worth checking out. Hop on my bike and ride over.

So here’s how you know the decedent was a serious gun guy.. he had cleared out his dining room, shored up the floor, and parked a four foot bed lathe and a milling machine in there and made it his machine shop. I got there in time to see a guy buy it for a ridiculously low amount of money and then come back with a flatbed and a forklift.

Indeed there was a  lot of reloading stuff…Berger bullets, Lapua brass, etc, etc. Heck there was freaking quiver of Dewey cleaning rods. I started chatting with the gal selling it all. Her dad passed away in February. Turns out, it was someone I knew. I hadnt seen him in about a year and his diabetes finally got the better of him, but not before cruelly making him a semi-blind, fuzzy-headed, nursing home candidate.

Since it was someone I knew, I had a good idea of what would and would not be there. Lotsa 6.5 stuff, plenty of .223, and lots of expensive reloading gear. The kids were up from Florida and wanted to get everything sold and outta there. Pretty much the perfect storm of motivation to allow one to make some…somewhat profitable…deals. So..yeah..I bought it all. Some of it I’m keeping, like the Lapua brass and a fw of the micrometer dies, the rest Im going to try and flip for quick cash.

And I gotta buy some beer for the guy who turned me onto the deal.

And I was trying so hard to not spend money this week. Mmmph.

Too many

I think I must be sleepwalking or something because I have no recollection of bidding on GunBroker for this thing.

On the other hand, if I was, in fact, sleepwalking my way into Gun Broker at least I maintained the presence of mind to not bid more than $150. Whats really interesting is that I have a line on an old-style Ruger PC9 carbine in 9mm that someone wants $375 for. Now, I already have two of those but both cost me significantly more than $375. And since I now have…uhm…:::checks spreadsheet::: fourteen (WTH!) of these P95’s sitting here, another PC9 to go with them seems reasonable. Kinda.

I still need to get the new model PC9 that takes Glock magazines though.

But, that’s going to have to wait because there’s another Ruger showing up on the doorstep this week that is going to set me back on gun acquisitions for a while.

Still not learning

Well, nuts….another gun show where I had the best of intentions and still managed to return to the house with something that made absolutely no sense to purchase….

The fine print:

A little something from the Slick Willy legacy… a ‘restricted’ marking, denoting that this particular boomstick was only to be possessed by Only Ones. Someone at the Mohave Sherriff’s Office is missing a Mini-14GB.

Back in the old days of survivalism, if you wanted a .223 semi-auto rifle your choice was limited to either an AR or a Mini-14. (Yes, you could get an HK93 or an AR-180…..maybe a Valmet …or some other equally obscure gun, but broadly your choices were just between the AR and the Mini.) The Mini-14 was about as accurate as your average AK, but also about as reliable as your average AK. And it was a bit cheaper than the Colt (which was virtually the only outfit making AR’s back then).

The GB models were targeted (so to speak) at law enforcement and, amsuingly, military markets. (Yes, some tiny jerkwater nations did issue the Mini as their primary long arm.) When Bill Ruger decided to start throwing people out of the lifeboat, he yanked the GB models and the ‘high capacity’ mags from the public marketplace. Fortunately, Bill Ruger has left the biological stage of existence and the company has largely undone the damage he wrought and has come out with many awesome products since.

Anyway, the GB was not on my shopping list and I genuinely have no use for it…but it’s kind of a novelty with the police markings and the ‘Restricted’ stamps. And the price was right. I have no idea what I’m going to do with it. I suppose in for a penny, in for a pound….I may as well hunt down a GB folder to put on there and go full A-Team with it. Or I may just pick up a half dozen mags, stick it in a soft case, and use it as a tertiary level ‘just in case’ carbine to store somewhere. Or I may sell it to the first person I can make a hundred bucks off of. Who knows. But, it will definitely go out to the range for a spin.

Triple header

I bought a bloody 590A1 today and am picking up the Glock tomorrow…why must these people go to the well so often????

“..” …Actually, lemme just screencap it:

I already have a Model 12. I bought one a few years back, had the barrel chopped down, and it makes for a handy takedown shotgun that just barely fits in my backpack. But…it’s an old design that features parts that havent been made since they lit Kennedys flame at Arlington. It’s not exactly a primary, secondary, or even tertiary choice for a shotgun. BUT the fact that it takes down is handy.. so I bought one.

This one, which is actually cheaper than the first one I bought, is in pristine condition except for a hairline crack in the stock and some freckling starting to form. 1914 manufacture and it is a strong 90%+. The crack and the slight freckling are all that I can find wrong with it. All the edges are sharp and it’s a gun that looks like it rolled right off the factory floor. Too nice for me to cut down. I’ll take it to the gun show this weekend and see if someone will gimme $300-$350 for it.

But…good grief…July has been a gun heavy month…Win 1200, Win 12, Mossberg 590A1, Ruger AR, Glock .357… I really went overboard this month.

And then it just lowballed from there…. Pt II

Buy some AK mags so I can keep buying guns I dont need!

“Mossberg 590 12 ga with extended tube. extendable stock. interested?”

Dammit.

Why does this happen a) right after I get paid and b) when I have to be somewhere in 15 minutes?

Short version: someone bubbatized a 590A1 with some cheapo M4-style stock and a coat of spraypaint. But..for $135 I can just rattlecan the whole thing.

Need to contact the guys at Choate and see what they have for a replacement stock/forend.

And I was just recovering from the Ruger last week.

But…then it got worse. I somehow managed to say yes to a NIB Glock 32 for …. $300.

Double dammit.

I’ll keep the 590A1 for a stash gun, but the Glock is getting swapped out for the first Glock 9mm I can find.

Article – Police: Delaware Wal-Mart Worker Stole Thousands Of Rounds Of Ammunition, Survival Gear

There’s a right way, and there’s..well..this way:

MILFORD, Del. (CBS) — A worker at a Wal-Mart in Delaware is accused of stealing thousands of rounds of ammunition and survival gear from the store where he worked.

Investigators say 35-year-old Linwood D. Hallman Jr. is facing a felony theft charge. Police say the thefts began on January 31st.

According to the Milford Police Department, during his employment at Wal-Mart, Hallman Jr. removed several thousand rounds of ammunition and survival-related items from the store.

Police say that detectives recovered the ammunition from a home located on Butler Avenue in Lincoln, along with a rifle scope and survival bags and kits. Multiple firearms and knives were also seized from the home, police said.

Well, I guess we know why that WalMart was always outta .22 ammo, don’t we?

I can see the temptation to loot your employer if your employer happens to deal in Things That Would Be Useful. But…stealing is stealing. While I can understand the temptation, I can’t support it. Suck it up and spend your own money, like the rest of us poor slobs.

Glockness

Completely unexpected, completely unwanted, but when a paperless like-new Gen3 Glock comes your way for way below market what can you do?

20150105_203119I’ll sit on it until someone with a 9mm Glock is looking for something to trade. In the meantime, maybe I’ll throw a Streamlight on it and use it as a house gun.
