Finally got around to trying the packet of long-life pre-cooked ground beef that I mentioned in a few earlier posts. The package was ‘Italian Flavored’ indicating that this would seem to be just the ticket for pasta sauce, right? Way too much fennel….too much spices in general. The texture of the meat was okay, but its definitely in the I-probably-wouldnt-eat-it-unless-it-were-a-disaster sort of thing. Not to be dissuaded, I will try the “Mexican Flavored” (Tastes like Mexicans??) and the other spiced flavor as well. Sensing my disappointment, my lovely partner in preparedness (How prepared? Theres 1000 rounds of 9mm in her truck at the moment) picked me up some foil pouches of chicken and another of turkey breast. One way or another, by god, I am not going through the apocalypse as a freakin’ vegetarian. (Although, from a logistics standpoint it would be a good idea.)

Had some excitement at the Zerostead the other day. Broken pipe in the basement. In the process of dealing with it I managed to cut my hand up nicely. So, being the Zero, I knew exactly where my amply stocked first aid kit was and retrieved it. That was the plan. The reality was that Zero’s partner-in-preparedness had moved it to a cabinet that had some stuff piled in front of it. So, I had to remove objects to allow access to the cabinet door and then retrieve my bag from the cabinet. I didnt *need* to say anything, she obviously recognized that there *was* a good reason I left the bag tucked in the corner of the room where it could be easily found. But, nonetheless, I did say “See, this is why I want to keep this bag out in the open.” She readily agreed and its been sitting on the floor under one of the pieces of furniture quietly waiting for its next moment to shine.

“Day After Tomorrow” comes out in a few weeks and a TV disaster movie (”10.5″) is on this weekend. Im sure therell be shots of the stereotypical camouflage-clad survivalists threatening people with guns or whatnot. (shrug) Maybe it’ll make some people think “Hey, maybe we should keep a footlocker of gear in the house just in case”.
====================
Took the Tactical Tailor backpack out for a spin up to the ‘M’ the other day. Comfortable, hydration system worked nicely in it, and it rode very well. I am pleased with this piece of gear. How pleased? Well, my lovely partner got one and I coveted it so much that she got me one. I showed it to my LMI buddies and one of them wound up getting one. The other LMI buddy saw that one, thought it was great, and will be getting one. www.tacticaltailor.com … some good stuff.
====================
Finally got out to do some shooting the other day. The 10/22 were having some problems with my Butler Creek hi-caps, but I attribute that to the guns needing cleaning. The Ruger 10-round mags worked flawlessly.

Im starting to think that the ‘Zero’ in Commander Zero stands for my bank balance. I went to the gun show today and found all sortsa goodies…

Sutures, sutures, sutures.
Lightstick carrycases
A nice all Belgian old HiPower for $395. Good shape but missing bluing. A serious candidate for purchase. (sigh)
Some books on various useful subjects.
Glock knives, Glock e-tools (entrenching tools, not mailware)
33-rd Glock mags (just the thing for when I get my KelTec carbine)
Some niiiiiice AR accessories
Tracer & incendiary ammo in .223 and .30-06

I need some sort of federal grant. Maybe the Dept. Of Fatherland Security has an extra couple million for ‘Montana Civil Defense’.

If it wasnt for the fact that they expect me to get married and have kids, becoming a Mormon just for the sake of networking against The Day would have alot of appeal. Id very much like to see if I can get access to their local cannery here…I need to see if I know any Mormons who might be willing to let me accompany them on such a trip. Be nice to be able to pack whatever I want into some #10 cans with an oxygen absorber and save myself a few bucks.
——————–
Now that I’ve inventoried the AR stuff, I need to update the supplies spreadsheet to reflect that. Also need to get some more shelving and whatnot down in the bunker. And, come to think of it, add a small desk and desk light so I can do my ‘administrative’ stuff down there…no point spreading AR parts across the dining room table if I can avoid it. Try and keep all that stuff in one place.
———————
Still need to pick up at least one radio scanner this year. If Something Bad happens, I wanna be able to listen in on the various radio calls.

The more I sift through the Tactical Tailor website the more I realize I need to make alot more money.

Well, managed to finally get some time to inventory things. One of the things I had been wanting to do wasa inventory the support gear for the AR’s. Very sobering. Im doing great on spare parts but not as well as I’d like on magazines. Heres a partial breaakdown:
(26) 30-rd GI mags
(12) Eagle 30-rd plasatic mags
(8) 20-rd GI mags
(2) 20 rd steel mags
(4) firing pins
(4) bolts
(1) bolt carrier
Assorted spare parats for lower receiver inc trigger, sear, springs, pins, etc.
(1) recoil spring
(1) recoil spring buffer
etc, etc, etc.

Not nearly as many mags as Id like. This puts me at about 24 mags per AR. I want at least 30 per. Why so many? Mags, my friends, are consumables they get bent, get lost, get dented, left behind, etc, etc. Additionally, I want enough mags that I can keep a dozen off-site at various resupply locations. So – at next weekends gun show I haave to see if I can pick up some more GI 30’s…usually they can be had for about $15 ea. Still too much $$$ in my opinion, but….

Might get a chance to go shooting tomorrow. We shall see..

Spring in ZeroLand….the sun, the greenery, the warm-weather shooting. Ahhhh.

Whats the threat assessments look like these days? Well, tell ya one thing, I would NOT wanna be in Iraq or Afghanistan around Nov. 4…..no better way to tip the election than by launching a massive bombing campaign with the idea of using the televised body count to influence elections.

But thats overseas……

Domestically, its going to be just like what happened in Spain. Bomb/poison/immolate something resulting in a hige body count and hopefully make the Americans vote against Bush to put an end to the carnage. Again, not a concern for me since Im pretty far away from anything stragically valued by either side. Howver, I am not sheltered from the repercussions of such an event. Example, I was 2000 miles from the World Trade Center atrocity, yet Im affected by the repercussions – Patriot Act, airport security, etc, etc.

Speaking of patriots, as all of you know, April 19 is the true Patriots Day. I plan to be at the range with my contemporary musket-equivalent doing what every responsible soul should be doing – familiarizing ones self with the tools of liberty.

I keep wanting to get some bunkerwork done (inventorying, etc, etc) but by the time I get home and have dinner I just don’t feel like doing much of anything. Very bad. But, come hell or Hiawatha, Im gonna get down there and do some work…might even take some pictures to share if you people are lucky.
