Long strange road

ETA: And I just noticed that ,Rawles posted on his SurvivalBlog that  “Today, April 15, 2026, is the 23rd Blogiversary of my buddy Commander Zero’s Notes From The Bunker blog. Congratulations!”) Glad he, and a few other folks, remembered because…I didn’t. Too much Beta Site on my brain.

I was reminded by someone in the comments that today is the 23’rd anniversary of the blog. Thats a long time to be rehashing the same subjects over and over…yet here we are.

It would not be a blog anniversary post without me gently needling Friend Of The Blog ™ ,Rawles over at SurvivalBlog that I predate him by about three years. But, giving credit where its due, he posts far more frequently than I do so while I’ve got him in terms of years, he’s got me in terms of quantity (and views).

A lot has changed in those years. Notably me. Those grey hairs come fast, man. But I’m still in reasonably good health and temper. Among other things, the hand-to-mouth nature of those early days has changed. I’ve a lot more money to do what  I want with than when I started this adventure.

If you roll back far enough in the blog, you can see the first mentions of the Beta Site. Took a bit of time to finally acquire it, but acquire it I did. Hopefully it won’t take another twenty years to get the place appointed the way I’d like.

It’s tough to rechew the same topics over and over for twenty years. One of the things I’m going to enjoy about the Beta Site is that it’ll give me some new adventures to document and ideas to expand upon.

So there you go, kids. Twentythree years of brain droppings. If you’ve enjoyed any of it, feel free to swing by Patreon and put a few bucks into the Beta Site Development Fund…the barbed wire and sentry guns ain’t gonna pay for themselves.

Has it really been that long

I had completely forgotten about it, and was reminded by someone who commented that they saw the notice over at SurvivalBlog, but today is he 22nd anniversary of the blog.

Thats just … incomprehensible.

I would be remiss to not take advantage of it by saying if you’ve found this blog useful or, more likely, entertaining over the last two decades (five presidential administrations!) please wander over to Patreon and give your ol’ buddy Zero some lovin’.

I’d also like to point out, in a very good naturedly petty way, that I just barely beat out ,Rawles in getting into the blogosphere. In fact, I recall when I discovered he had started blogging and saying to someone “Hey, that guy that wrote that book? He’s got a blog now!” Ah, good times.

And, for giggles, how many apocalypses have we gone though in that time….lets see….I count at least eight or nine, not including the perpetually right-around-the-corner Peak Oil drama. And yet, here we are.

And, like every election, when these anniversaries roll around I feel like “Yeah, but this year is the year that will be worse than all the others.” And yet….still here.

How much longer will this blog keep posting? Beats me. Some people might say it jumped the shark years ago and is now just a fading starlet trying to vainly pretend she’s still glamourous. Others might think its ben pretty consistent over the year (good or bad). Regardless, Im not planning on going anywhere but life moves pretty fast. Anything can happen.

Anyway, for those who have been along since Day One, thanks for following. And for those who haven’t been around since Day One but have still become regulars around here, thank you for your interest. And, finally, for those who actually have ponied up a few bucks here and here , or sent me cool stuff in the mail, mucho thanks.

It was 20 years ago today…

Well, today is the twentieth anniversary of me thinking “Hmm, maybe I’ll start a survivalist blog”. And, lo, it came to pass…….

The original incarnation of the blog was on LiveJournal (remember them?), and then I grabbed a copy of PageMaker and made up a website. That lasted for only a few weeks until I decided to go with WordPress. And, since then, that’s what I’ve used.

It’s been a fabulously interesting twenty years as far as blog-related stuff goes.

First and foremost, I like to needle ,Rawles about how my blog predates his by a few years. However, in all fairness, his blog is updated every day whereas mine is usually every three days or so. It’s a good-natured rivalry that is silly because, hands down, he has the more informative and useful blog. But…I was in the space first. ;0

See, my blog was never about telling people how to prepare, or why to prepare, it was simply to tell how and why *I* was preparing. I make mistakes, and sometimes I have brilliant insights….hit-n-miss is pretty much how the posting goes around here.

I’ve met a few people in the preparedness and gunblog world. I’ve also been ’email friends’ with a few people in the industry. I’m very grateful for those experiences and have enjoyed meeting all of them. I try very hard not to name drop in this blog because of privacy, but I’ve met some of the ‘big names’ in blogging. Fine folks, every one of them.

Over twenty years, I’ve seen a lot of blogs come and go. The most fascinating was our good friend Harry over at Self-Sufficient Living. He went dark and deleted his blog a number of years ago and eventually stopped replying in email. Maybe he died, maybe he went to ground. Dunno. But he was a great guy to read and I enjoyed our communications. I’d love to catch up with him sometime.

Over twenty years you can see trends change and fall in and out of favor. This blog is older than the iPhone that many of you are reading this post on. When this blog started we were still in the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban era. Can you imagine? Neutered rifles and 10-rd magazines…the horror!

And, of course, over twenty years we have had all sorts of ‘this is it!’ moments as told to us by the media and people who had their tinfoil on too tightly. Just off the top of my head….SARS, Bird Flu, Avian Flue, Kung Flu, 2012, Fukishima, Ebola, Peak Oil, assorted earthquakes, etc, etc. Yet…..we’re still here.

It doesn’t take twenty years of thought to come up with “Stay safe, live within your means, be ready for a rainy day, plan ahead.” So, why have I been re-hashing the same stuff over and over? Well, its not always the same stuff…technology and toys change over time, new goodies come to market, etc. But, mostly, I’ve come to enjoy the routine and structure of blogging. And most importantly, I like that my interactions with people who read the blog remind me that maybe I’m not some outlier with a weird camo fetish…there are plenty of people out there who think the same way. Its a nice reminder that Im not alone in my beliefs and practices. Don’t underestimate how important that is.

What does the future hold? Beats me. My life is completely different than it was on Day One of the blog. Back then I had lotsa time and no money. Now its the other way around. Back then it was a big deal to spend $20 on batteries or a MagLite. Nowadays I routinely drop several hundred bucks every couple weeks on preparedness acquisitions (and way too many Ruger P95Dc’s). I’ll probably keep blogging until either the apocalypse actually happens or until I finally get my beloved Middle O’ Nowhere heavily fortified house. And even then i might not stop. Just can’t really say.

In the meantime, I’ll use this moment to shamelessly shill for myself – if you’ve enjoyed the last twenty years or twenty minutes of my posting, feel free to head over to Patreon and throw a little something my way. I promise it will go to a cause that would make Schumer and Feinstein fall down with a case of the vapors.

Thanks to everyone who reads the blog and I hope you all continue your work on making yourselves more resilient against what the future holds, no matter what that might be. We’ll see how many more years we can keep cranking out these posts.

Nineteen years

Well, its the anniversary of the blog. I started this thing back in 2003 and in that time we’ve had…hmmm…Bird Flu, SARs, 2012, Hurricane Katrina, Obama, inflation, Ebola, Zika, Wuhan Flu, and a few other interesting events. But..still here. And I haven’t had to use my AK… this was a good day.

If you’ve found the 19 years worth of brain droppings to be entertaining, or even informative, I welcome you to sign up for my Patron account. a buck or two a month goes a long way towards keeping the lights on, the domain registered, and the mindless ramblings of a weird gun nut in Montana flowing. And, lets not kid ourselves, gearing up for the apocalypse ain’t cheap.

What’s been the most interesting part of blogging over 19 years? Hmm. Looking back at old posts and seeing how my forecasts of the future did (sometimes) or did not (most of the time) turn out the way I thought they would. And, wow, I’m such a different person than I was when I started this blog. Not worse, not better, just…a different person.

But! Still a person with a keen interest in being prepared and having enhanced resilience.

On a much lighter note, I like to needle Friend Of The Blog ,Rawles from time to time about how I predate his blog by about two years, although he has managed the remarkable accomplishment of managing to post every single day whereas I usually average a post every three days.

When will enough be enough? A lot of blogs have come and gone in that nineteen years and one day there’ll be a time when this one goes dark as well. After all, it’s not easy saying the same thing over and over, in dozens of different ways, for almost two decades. And, considering that the ostensible mission of this blog was to chronicle my own adventures in preparedness, after almost twenty years I should be pretty much done in terms of getting my ducks in a row. But…no, it seems there’s always more to do, to learn, to buy, to pack away, etc.

Next year will be the twenty year anniversary. Maybe I’ll have a cake or something………….

Admin – Fifteen years of blogging

It is, approximately, the 15 year birthday of the blog today. Fifteen years is a long time. The natural impulse is to look back but there’s a lot in there I’d just as soon not dwell on. Oh, sure, good and bad….but but it’s never an even mix. People..good and bad, experiences…good and bad.

Initially the blog was simply a space on LiveJournal that I had for posting about preparedness. Then, for a very short while, I tried HTML’ing my own website that incorporated the blog. Then I switched to WordPress and it’s been that way ever since. While WordPress has been a pretty stable platform over the years (knock on wood), I cannot say as much about some of the hosting services I’ve used. (The moral of that story, by the way, is that if you have a blog that you’re fond of running….back that sucker up frequently.)

Originally, the blog wasn’t about disseminating preparedness info, rather it was about what I was doing in my life for my own preparedness. Notes to myself about things I needed to get, or my impressions of various gear and guns that I’d picked up. From day one, the blog was really just a sort of journal to keep track of my experiences and thoughts on preparedness. Things evolve and while it still is mostly about me and my efforts, there’s also a strong undercurrent of ‘hey, you should take a look at this.’

One fascinating aspect of having been doing this for this long is that I can glean interesting info..I can see how prices of things (as well as availability) have changed over time and, most importantly, how forecasts of things (gun laws, metals prices, political changes, etc.) have turned out. There aren’t many actual blogs on preparedness I’ve found that have the same length of time at it as I do. That’s not to say there aren’t any, just that I haven’t run across them. However, in the time the blog has been kicking around I have visited hundreds, if not thousands, of other preparedness blogs…some interesting, some not…some ran for quite a while, some disappeared quickly….but a few have had legs and are still around (and I read them daily). [Most notably ,Rawles’ SurvivalBlog which popped up about two years after I opened this place….I knew I should have registered that domain name!]

It’s been interesting to see how things have held up over time..for example, I have posts where I mention putting some food away for long term storage and then ten years later I have a post about opening it up and using it. Thats kind of a rare thing in the blogosphere.

Expenses? Well, I figure it’s been a couple grand for hosting, bandwidth, domain registration, etc, over the last fifteen years. Spread it out over 180 months and it doesn’t seem so painful, but when I look back on it as one lump sum..well…thats a few AR15’s that never were. (And if you’d like to kick in a few bucks for housekeeping expenses around the blog, there’s a link right here…

Every dollar you spend does not go to a starving child in Africa, a baby seal rescue organization, or to a GoFundMe for some kid with cancer. Instead it goes to a blogger in Montana who uses it to pay for website expenses, .223 ammo, freeze drieds, and lap dances from morally-challenged and financially-illiterate coeds. (Well, mostly the first three things.) Ah, but seriously….I try to not put the arm on folks more than once every several years. But, some folks want to help keep the lights on and I appreciate that greatly. Some folks take it up a notch and actually make a repeating monthly donation (sort of a subscription) and for that I’m really grateful. And thats the end of the infomercial part of todays post.

The advent of cool stuff in those fifteen years? First and foremost is the expiration of the assault weapons ban…that annoying bit of Clinton legacy that gave us things like this: Many of you are too young to remember, but there was a time when the M4gery you paid $600 for today brought $1500. And your $12 PMAG was worth about $50. Second mortgages were the order of the day if you wanted something like a Beta 100-rd drum. Fortunately that nonsense expired in 2004, one year after the blog opened for business.

Gas prices ran the gamut from $1.75 to darn near $4, silver bounced between $6 and near-$50, and we all somehow managed to make it past half a dozen end-of-the-world scenarios including but not limited to: 2012, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Harvey, Peak Oil, Birld Flu, SARS, Ebola, Anthrax scares, and a few others that escaped me. Still no sign of Xenu, zombies, assorted religious returns, UN troops, alien overlords, or space Nazis.

Gunwise there have been some pretty forward movements…most notably the ‘arm brace’ fad, the somewhat-mainstreaming of the non-NFA 14″ not-a-shotguns, and the massive post-2016-election gun market slump that saw factory AR’s as low as $400 and AR mags cheaper than a Starbucks coffee. We also saw at least a half dozen panic buying episodes that we never really fully recovered from (if $15 bricks of Federal .22 are anything to go by. [or go buy]).

I suppose a very valid question is: how long can you keep blogging about a topic before you’ve exhausted every possible idea worthy of posting? Beats me…life has a bizarre way of throwing a curve ball (right at your head, usually) when you get to feeling complacent. I’ll keep blogging as long as I have internet and a pulse, I suppose. If the traffic dropped to near nothing I’d still blog…it’s something I really do for my own enjoyment rather than for the accolades and attention. (Although it’d be disingenuous for me to say that I haven’t enjoyed the very small level of notoriety that sometimes comes from these posts.) I suppose there’s never really a shortage of grass to graze on when it comes to preparedness topics. There will always be a hurricane, earthquake, riot, pandemic, or what have you, somewhere in the world that makes us re-examine the survivability of our existing systems.

Someday, though, I’d like to be able to make a post about how I’m sitting on the front porch of my little concrete hacienda out in boonies, watching the clouds drift by, listening to the creek, and occasionally popping off some ammo at whatever target of opportunity happens to pass by. Hey..it could happen.

At this point of introspection, the blogger would usually make some sort of comment like “I couldn’t have done it without you, the readers…and for that I am grateful.” Well, that sounds nice but it really isn’t true. Even if not a single person read this blog, it would still be here today and probably just as good (or bad) as it is now. But…the readers do make me enjoy blogging more than if it were just me yelling into the emptiness. So…theres that. I like to think that people who have hung around here a while have enjoyed the postings and in some way have felt a bit of a connection. That’s probably the biggest enjoyment I get from blogging – the connection. You see, back in the old days, before the interweb, we survivalists could very easily think that we were the only ones. We never really met other survivalists, or had a efficient way to communicate and meet  with other like-minded individuals, so it was very easy to think that you were unique and possibly a little weird in your outlook. Over the years, through the blog, I’ve had the immense satisfaction of encountering other people who had the same darn outlook.. and that sort of reinforcement is really useful at times. So…if nothing else, I hope I’ve helped to make some folks feel like they weren’t alone in their concerns and interests.

Thats about it, I guess. Back to our regularly scheduled brain droppings.
