So these arrived today:

Ruger Mini-14 factory 20-rd mags…marked ‘BLEMISH’. I think that means it was for the Blem military.

Price? $19.99 ea for a Ruger steel factory mag. w00t.

I know, I know…why didn’t I pass this on to you guys? Easy…about a half hour after I ordered…OOS. (Out of stock). Right place, right time.

(I swear, every single time I play with Mini-14 folder or the mags I wind up whistling the A-team them. Every. Single. Time. And I’m not even aware Im doing it! Curse you, Cannell!)

9mm Korean Glock mags

If you travel the gunternet you will, eventually, come across the Korean-made Glock magazines. They are variously called KCI, Kang, and a few other names. The story I heard was that Glock made a sweet deal to the Korean military for a contract and figured they’d make it up on the magazines. The Koreans, as I hear it, surprised them by buying the guns at the promotional price and then said “We’ll take care of the magazines ourselves, thanks for the deal on the guns though.”

True? Probably not. But, it seems plausible enough.

Anyway, for the last decade we’ve seen Korean mags coming in to the US in standard configurations and as happysticks and drums. I went and bought a bucket of .40 mags when they first came in and was severely disappointed. So much so, in fact, that I returned them to the vendor. However, at some point I came into a large (ahem) quantity of the 9mm mags. I stuck them away in an ammo can figuring I’d wait for the next mag ban and unload them then since I had no intention of using them. Fast forward a few years and I came into the Ruger 9mm carbine that takes Glock mags. I decided that I really didn’t want to shuffle my existing stash of ‘ready’ mags around so I pulled a couple of the Korean mags out of storage to use with the Ruger. To my surprise…they worked fine. The feed issues I had in .40? Not there. The swollen magazine body sticking int he mag well? Not there. Thinking it might have been the gun, I also tried the Korean mags in my G17 and…worked fine.

I’m not going to say they are something I’d ‘go to war’ with, but as range magazines it looks like they might be a good choice. Although, at this point, they sell (dealer cost) only a buck or two away from a Magpul Glock mag. And I’d rather have the Magpul mag over the Korean mag, and I’d rather have a factory Glock mag over either. But…it looks like the Korean 9mm mags of normal capacity seem to be an okay purchase.

Maximum Mini Mags

As I noted a few posts back, it looks like TAPCO is heading for the ‘no longer a going concern’ category of gun-related businesses. While I wont miss the SKS stocks and other crap, I will miss the Mini-14 mags. So….

Ordered these off GunBroker. Came out to $10@ which was reasonable. And, once I had received a tracking number indicating my order had shipped, I shared the auction link with you guys in case anyone wanted to grab some while they could. Well, apparently a bunch of you must have because when I go to check those same auctions the prices are up 20%. FYI, $12 is actually pretty close to what dealer cost was so theyre still a reasonable alternative to the $28 Ruger mags.

Ordered 25 because I only have the two Mini-14’s and they aren’t part of my plans.

I have another ten mags sitting around as ‘ready’ mags in case, thorugh some fluke, I wind up actually having to run the zombie apocalypse with the Mini-14, but the rest of these are Deep Sleepers.

Mag musings

Real life intrudes. I got a couple things in my civilian life that I need to get on top of so it’s going to be thin postings for a couple days.

Meanwhile….

Various reports say that between one and five million magazines made their way into California during that little window of opportunity a few weeks ago. Everything I read, which may or may not be true, says that wholesalers, retailers, vendors, and pretty much everyone in the business made it a point to prioritize getting the California orders expedited. I would imagine its the first time in history so many have done so much for a state that they normally disdain.

It should be very interesting to see how this shake out in the courts (as well as seeinghow far it gets). Getting this sort of thing bumped up to the Supremes, could be very interesting and the stakes could be higher than some states are willing to risk.

My own magazine needs are pretty well met, but mags are a consumable. And, theyre a very portable commodity that can be sold or traded for rather easily. So, really, unless you’re running for your life or trying to swim, you can’t have too many.

This magazine is original equipment; which means it’s manufactured in the same factory using the same process as the magazines that shipped with the gun originally.

Hmm. Aftermarket mags are always a crapshoot with the Mini-14 but these might not be bad. For $15 they might be worth a risk. If anyone tries them, let me know.

 

Article – Judge blocks California’s ban on high-capacity magazines over 2nd Amendment concerns

If you want to buy a ‘hi cap’ magazine these days, you might notice that prices are a bit higher in many places. Reason?

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — High-capacity gun magazines will remain legal in California under a ruling Friday by a federal judge who cited home invasions where a woman used the extra bullets in her weapon to kill an attacker while in two other cases women without additional ammunition ran out of bullets.

“Individual liberty and freedom are not outmoded concepts,” San Diego-based U.S. District Judge Roger Benitez wrote as he declared unconstitutional the law that would have banned possessing any magazines holding more than 10 bullets.

The market for magazines just suddenly grew by several million customers who are going to ‘panic buy’ as many freedom sticks as they can ‘while the gettins good’. Supply and demand.

It is a tremendously un-9th-Circuit decision. Historically the 9th Circus has been pretty far to the left in terms of it’s decisions. It’ll be interesting to see if this one sticks.

Does any of this affect the average survivalist? Well, yes. First, if youre a survivalist in California you are probably maxxing out your credit cards at this very moment. Secondly, if you were planning on a large purchase of magazines in preparation for next years election…you might want to double check availability and pricing.

I’m sure the folks in California are besides themselves with disbelief. I wonder what this bodes for other states with similar laws.

Magpul 9mm happysticks…only three years late

Dang near three years ago Magpul announced that they were introducing 27-rd happysticks for the Glock 9mm.

And then……nothing…as I noted almost a year and a half later….

I ordered….uhm….25….and got free shipping and a bulk discount that lowered it to $17 per magazine. I need to go out to the range tomorrow to adjust the new sights on the G17 so these will come along for the ride.

Anyone know of a leather maker who will make Galco Miami Classic compatible mag pouches that’ll hold extended mags like this?

Your average G17 carried 17 freedom seeds…If the day comes when you need a spare reload of 27 rounds, your life has pegged the needle on the Interesting-O-Meter. However, given the amount of 9mm carbines that take Glock mags these days, why wouldnt you have a dozen of these? True fact: I was going to order a hundred to put away in Deep Sleep but just couldn’t bring myself to commit to that kind of expense. I settled for 25…for this month.

AR mag deal?

The Ak mags will be going out over the next couple days. Smart move all you foward-thinking folks that picked some up.

My vendor also has ASC brand AR mags at a similar price. These would be at the same price  as the AK deal – 10/$100 delivered. Magpuls wind up costing about the same, but while Magpul makes a fine product I prefer the aluminum mags for long term. You don’t have to agree, thats fine…we can still be friends.

Trouble is, I don’t know if there’s enough demand to make it worth dropshipping a couple cases of these things. I need people to commit to a total of 100 magazines (10 bundles of ten) to make it worthwhile. If you think thats the kind of deal you’d be seriously interested in (and when I say seriously, I mean that if it comes to pass you’ll actually come through and pony up the greenbacks) let me know in comments. If enough people commit I’ll go ahead and do it.

I’d like to have a yes/no on this project by the end of the week, so let me know.

ETA: Ok, I guess thats happening.

 

AK mag deal update

I have a handful of people who have been invoiced for the AK mag deal but haven’t paid up yet. Guys, I know its the holidays but if those invoices stay open another day or two I’ll have to close them to make those magazines available for other people. If you told me you wanted mags and you received an invoice for them….well…ya gotta pony up or theyre gonna go to someone else.

Expecting to have them shipped out to you foresightful guys Wednesday.
